Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility Limited Edition Watch
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility Limited Edition Watch, a watch with several allusions to historical models, is miraculously back more than 40 years after the launch of what is arguably the most sought-after vintage PD wristwatch.
The first item ever released by Porsche Design was a wristwatch, which Ferdinand Alexander Porsche exhibited in 1972. This utilitarian notion, which was at the time a daring design and a perfect illustration of the adage “forms follows function,” would swiftly reach new heights with Porsche Design’s iconic 1970s Military Chronograph.
Instead of the previous model’s (which was made for the U.S. Air Force’s flying squadron) tiger’s head-adorned dial, the new watch bears a screaming marmot between 4 and 5 o’clock.
A new “TiC” emblem, which is a contemporary rendition of the 3H sign (for tritium) of the military model, is positioned in the recognisable location between 1 and 2 o’clock on the dial to reference the usage of titanium carbide. Bright blue SuperLuminova is used here in place of tritium.
Reproduced in the matte black dial and using the same readable typography as the original, the watchmaker has paid a modern homage to that 1979 design.
With a quick-release mechanism, Porsche Design fastens the new watch to a slate-gray ‘Bund’ strap made of Porsche car leather. The chronograph also has an extra option: a white textile strap with an emblem bearing the coordinates of the F.A.T. Ice Race.
Pre-orders for the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility Limited Edition are now being taken on the company’s website. It will go on sale globally on January 15, 2024, at Porsche Design Stores and at a few select watch dealers.
